My understanding is that, for hard use barrels, chrome lining is superior to Melonite. For the average weekend target plinker there's not much difference. I know stainless is supposed to be more accurate than chrome lined , but it appears the melonite coated is as well. Anybody else experience this? I'm guessing these barrels were S&W contract.
WebFeb 6, 2024 · Chrome has excellent corrosion and abrasion resistant properties, but only coats the inside of the barrel. To protect the outside of the barrel, a phosphate coating is typically added. MIL-SPEC is manganese phosphate, which requires oil to provide excellent corrosion resistance on the outside of the barrel.
WebNov 2, 2024 · Chrome lined or nitrided barrels will last considerably longer before requiring replacement. Barrels chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor tend to require replacement a bit more frequently. It’s not unusual to see a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel replaced in the neighborhood of 2,000 – 3,000 rounds with an untreated barrel.
